This course is intended for academics looking to commercialize a technology, discovery, or drug-like molecule developed in their lab. Whether participants are interested in starting a new company, licensing their technology to an existing biotech, or partnering with a biotech venture creation group, this course will provide a practical introduction to the process of spinning out academic science.

Over the course of 7 days, trainees (typically in groups of 1 - 2 prospective “co-founders”) will become familiar with the key steps involved in translating academic research into a commercial opportunity, including:

  • Licensing from academic institutions
  • Company formation and incorporation
  • Venture financing and working with investors
  • Commercialization paths

Trainees will also hear directly from some of the industry’s most accomplished biotech founders, investors, and drug developers, who will share their experiences and advice on building successful companies and partnerships.

By the end of the course, each group will have developed:

  • A pitch deck communicating their scientific vision and commercial opportunity
  • An operating plan and budget
  • A research plan outlining key next steps

The course will culminate on the final day with “Pitch Day,” where trainees will present to a panel of biotech venture capitalists and industry experts for feedback.

Trainees may include graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and junior PIs interested in exploring how their research could form the basis of a new biotech venture or industry partnership.
