Dr. Ganem
received his A.B. degree in biochemistry from Harvard
College in 1972 and his M.D. degree
from Harvard Medical School
in 1977. Following his medical residency at Harvard he did subspecialty
clinical training in infectious diseases at UCSF, where he also undertook
postdoctoral research in the laboratory of Harold Varmus. He joined the faculty
at UCSF in 1984, where his lab has focused on the replication and pathogenesis
of human viral pathogens, including hepatitis B virus and human herpesvirus 8. Dr. Ganem is a
member of the American Academy of Microbiology and the Institute of Medicine
of the National Academy of Sciences, and is President-Elect of the American
Society for Virology
