PLANT GENOMES & BIOTECHNOLOGY:
FROM GENES TO NETWORKS
November 30 - December 3, 2011
Free Pre-Meeting Workshop on
iPlant Tools and Services
November 30, 12 noon to 6 p.m.
Research in plant biology depends increasingly on high-throughput data collection methods and complex computational analyses. Chartered by the National Science Foundation, the iPlant Collaborative is developing a cyberinfrastructure that removes many of the barriers researchers face in managing and sharing large data sets as well as applying sophisticated computational analysis tools. This hands-on workshop will introduce several iPlant technologies:
- Discovery Environment: iPlant's Web-based system for managing data, running analyses, and creating workflows. Many tools commonly used in genomics research are in the Discovery Environment and additionally, researchers can integrate and share their own tools.
- Atmosphere: iPlant's cloud services for both installing complicated software packages and harnessing on-demand computational power. Atmosphere allows you to easily launch and manage instances of Linux-based servers that are pre-installed with custom software.
- DNA Subway: iPlant's educational bioinformatics platform that engages students in genome analysis and DNA barcoding. DNA Subway bundles research-grade bioinformatics tools and databases into intuitive workflows with appealing interfaces, all of which incorporate the metaphor of a subway map.
